Collection: Guyodo (Frantz Jacques)

Guyodo (b. 1973), born Frantz Jacques on December 7, 1973, is a Haitian sculptor, painter, and draftsman from Port-au-Prince. He grew up off the Grand Rue, where as a child he carved wooden souvenirs for tourists, and he still lives and works in the neighborhood where he was born. He became part of Atis Rezistans, a community of artists who create from discarded materials. His sculptures combine car parts, plastic, wire, and found bone, while his paintings and drawings use cereal boxes, calendar backs, and secondhand clothing. Vodou spirits and the realities of poverty in Haiti are recurring themes. Self-taught and working independently, he has exhibited in Paris, New York, London, Milan, Bordeaux, Pittsburgh, Edinburgh, and Geneva. A 2020 fire destroyed more than two thousand of his works.
