Description

This figure by Andre Eugene, named "Gede Fè" by the gallery after Gede, the Vodou spirit of the dead and guardian of the cemetery, is assembled from salvaged metal, rubber, and found hardware. As a founding member of the Atis Rezistans collective working out of Port-au-Prince's Grand Rue, Eugene transforms discarded urban material into figures that speak to resilience, spirituality, and the resourcefulness of daily life in Haiti. The sculpture shows some rusting at its base, consistent with its recycled metal construction and age. This piece comes from a private collection in New York and is in good overall condition. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.

À propos de cet artiste

André Eugène (b. 1959) is a Haitian assemblage sculptor working in scrap metal, wood, and found objects. Born in downtown Port-au-Prince, he trained in the woodcarving tradition of the Grand Rue neighborhood and became a founding member of the artists' collective Atis Rezistans and a leading figure among the Sculptors of Grand Rue. His studio there served as a workshop, gallery, and museum. His contemporary sculpture draws on Vodou, mortality, sexuality, and Haiti's social and economic struggles. In 2006 he contributed to a large collective sculpture now permanently exhibited at the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. His work has been shown at the Museum of Ethnography in Geneva, the Fowler Museum at UCLA, Nottingham Contemporary, and the Grand Palais in Paris, and was included in the Haitian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. After more than 50 years in Grand Rue, he relocated to Port-Salut in southern Haiti.
