Description

A quiet, contemplative portrait by Haitian artist Jean-René Jérôme, painted in 1983. A woman with closed eyes and softly parted lips rests beneath a sweeping wide-brimmed hat, her face lit in glowing ochre and gold against deep umber and rust. The richly mottled, weathered surface gives the work an aged, almost fresco-like depth, while a small luminous sphere in the lower left adds a note of mystery and balance. Signed and dated “Jn-René Jérôme ‘83” in the lower right, the painting comes from a private collection in New York. Its warm, earthy palette and dreamlike mood make it a distinctive example of Haitian figurative painting from the early 1980s. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity is included.
