Description

A quietly commanding original painting by Luce Turnier, one of the few women among the founding generation of Haiti's Centre d'Art. Painted in 1972 in oil on board, the work depicts a young girl seated with her hands folded, dressed in a pale blue frock patterned with small white and green blossoms, her hair gathered into two buns and marked with a pair of bright orange ribbons. Turnier renders the figure with the psychological restraint that defines her portraiture, a steady, searching gaze set against a flattened field of teal and dove grey that owes as much to European modernism as it does to the visual rhythms of Haiti. Where many of her Centre d'Art contemporaries leaned toward narrative or decorative scenes, Turnier's portraits sit closer to observation and interiority, built from careful tonal shifts rather than incident. Luce Turnier est née à Jacmel en 1924 et décédée à Paris en 1995. Elle fait partie des premières femmes artistes à intégrer le Centre d'Art dans les années 40.
