Description
Description
A lively Rara procession fills the canvas in this 1989 street carnival scene by Haitian artist Micheline Prezeau. A drummer anchors the center, flanked by a woman balancing a bowl on her head, a dancer in a pointed hat, and a woman in a lime green dress with her arm raised in celebration. Musicians, a crowned reveler, and a blank banner crowd the upper register beneath an ornate lantern-like emblem, so the whole composition feels like it is in motion.
Bold black outlines and flat, jewel-toned figures in orange, red, yellow, and blue stand out against a hazy teal and mauve ground. Signed and dated 1989 at the lower right and inscribed “Haiti,” this work comes from the collection of Marie & Georges S. Nader. Its rhythmic energy and rich palette make it a striking focal point for collectors of Haitian art, and a joyful addition to any wall. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity from the gallery accompanies the work.

Micheline Prézeau (b. 1943) is a Haitian painter. She ran an art gallery for 14 years, reportedly in Pétion-Ville, and raised her daughter, the contemporary artist Barbara Prézeau-Stephenson, in an artistic household. Her figurative paintings depict everyday Haitian life, including seaside markets, rendered in bright colors with thick, textured outlines.
