Description

Painted in 1966, Market Day by Wilson Bigaud (1931-2010) captures a village square alive with commerce. A vendor sits among her wares, a woman balances a basket on her head, and a man carries a bundle across his shoulder, while a boy leads a loaded donkey past a cyclist. Tin-roofed houses, laundry on the line, and blue hills in the distance frame the scene in warm terracotta, teal, and soft yellow. Bigaud was a leading figure of the Haitian Renaissance and one of the celebrated painters of the Centre d’Art, known for his vivid color and his affectionate portrayals of everyday Haitian life. Market scenes were a lasting theme in his work, and this one shows his confident, rhythmic composition at its best. The painting is signed “Wilson Bigaud” and dated 1966 at lower right. It comes from a private collector in New York, and its condition is consistent with its old age. A certificate of authenticity accompanies the work.
