Description

Painted in 1976, Sharing a Meal by Wilson Bigaud (1931-2010) gathers a Haitian village around a simple cooking stove in the shade of tall trees. Neighbors in bright blues and pinks sit and stand with cups and bowls in hand while a woman ladles food from the pot. Children, a pig, a goat, and a rooster wander through the foreground. Behind them, a woman carries a basket of fruit down a path toward thatched and pastel-painted homes, and rows of eggplant grow at the edge of the clearing. Bigaud was a leading figure of the Haitian Renaissance and one of the celebrated painters of the Centre d’Art, known for his vivid color and his warm, detailed portrayals of everyday Haitian life. Community scenes like this one show the storytelling that made his work so beloved. The painting is signed “Wilson Bigaud” at lower right and comes from a private collection in New York. Its condition is consistent with its age, and a certificate of authenticity accompanies the work.
