Yves Michaud est né à Port-au-Prince, en Haïti, le 27 janvier 1950. Il commence à peindre en 1969 avec le célèbre maître Néhémy Jean. Au milieu des années 70, Michaud se lie d'amitié avec le grand impressionniste haïtien Carlo Jean-Jacques. Michaud est un artiste haïtien vivant de renom qui peint de façon remarquable des portraits intimes de la vie quotidienne des Haïtiens ; il utilise l'attitude corporelle et l'expression du visage pour élever ses sujets dans une zone éthérée, puis leur donne vie grâce à sa technique impeccable. Vers l'an 2000, Michaud adopte un style complètement différent pour se rafraîchir et commence à peindre sous le nouveau nom de Georges Desarmes. Résultat : les tableaux d'Yves Michaud se raréfient sur le marché.
