Description

Animal Market exemplifies Laurent Casimir’s mastery of rhythm, color, and movement in Haitian market scenes. Painted in the 1970s—before he began mass-producing works with studio assistants—this early composition reveals the artist’s distinct individuality and refined craftsmanship. In this vibrant tableau, a sea of figures fills the marketplace, their bodies rendered in Casimir’s signature stylized forms and vivid hues of red, yellow, green, and indigo. The orderly yet dynamic crowd surrounds a corral of livestock, reflecting both the bustle and harmony of rural Haitian life. The painting’s intricate repetition and luminous palette convey not only visual energy but also the spiritual vitality and communal essence at the heart of Haiti’s cultural identity. Casimir, a pioneer of Haitian modern art and a defining figure of the “market scene” genre, developed one of the most recognizable visual languages in Haitian painting. His early works, such as this one, remain highly sought after for their authenticity, balance, and expressive power. This painting is in good condition and belongs to a private collector in the Dominican Republic, from which it will be shipped. Our gallery will issue a certificate of authenticity upon purchase.
