Description
Description
This expressive mid-century painting by Haitian artist Daniel Lafontant portrays Christ crowned with thorns, rendered in rich earthy tones and bold brushwork. The composition reflects Lafontant’s ability to merge spiritual iconography with modernist technique, a hallmark of his mature style from the 1960s. The work conveys both the intensity of human suffering and the transcendence of faith, themes central to Lafontant’s oeuvre and to Haitian sacred art as a whole. This artwork is sold unframed from the private collection in the Domican Republic and our gallery will issue a Certificate of Authenticy upon purchase.
About this artist
About this artist
Daniel Lafontant (1922–?, Jacmel, Haiti) was a pioneering figure in 20th-century Haitian modernism. A founding member of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince and later director of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques, he helped shape the postwar generation of Haitian artists. Lafontant’s paintings blend Haitian spirituality with expressionist realism, using rhythmic brushwork and layered color to depict religious and folkloric themes. His works have been exhibited in Haiti, the United States, and Europe, and remain valued for their cultural and historical depth within Caribbean art history.
