Description

The late, self-taught Haitian artist Jorelus Joseph (1947–2009) painted this compelling acrylic Vodou scene of Papa Zaka on canvas, capturing the spirit’s rural symbolism and protective presence through vivid color and narrative clarity. Joseph’s distinctive naïve style—direct, expressive, and richly animated—translates ceremony and devotion into an image that feels both celebratory and culturally grounded, making the work an excellent acquisition for collectors seeking authentic Vodou iconography within the modern Haitian canon. The artwork is in good condition and is offered unframed. It comes from a private collector’s collection in Virginia and will be shipped directly from there. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Jorelus Joseph received a Gold Medal at the 3rd Biennial of Caribbean & Central American Artists at the Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic in 1996, an important recognition of his artistic achievement. Though not formally initiated, he was a devoted attendee of Vodou ceremonies and often cited them as a continual source of inspiration for his paintings. From 1991 to 2007, his work was exhibited widely across Haiti, including at Le Centre d’Art and the Musée d’Art Haïtien du Collège St-Pierre, and internationally in Belgium, France, the Dominican Republic, and the United States, including exhibitions at the Musée d’Art Naïf (Lasne), the Biennial of Santo Domingo, and museum presentations in Florida and Saint Croix.
