コレクション: Castera Bazile (Haitian, 1923-1966)

Castera Bazile (1923–1966) was a self-taught Haitian master and early member of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, joining the institution in 1944 during the emergence of modern Haitian art. He is widely regarded as one of Haiti’s most important 20th-century painters. In 1951, Bazile created three murals for the Episcopal Cathedral of Sainte-Trinité in Port-au-Prince, one of the most significant artistic commissions in Haitian art history. His paintings were later exhibited internationally in the United States and Europe. Bazile’s work is celebrated for its instinctive compositions, warm harmonious colors, and the expressive sincerity characteristic of Haitian folk tradition. Art historian Gérald Alexis described his paintings as embodying the “typical sincerity of Haitian folk expression.”Today, Castera Bazile’s works remain highly sought after by museums and collectors of modern Haitian art.
