Dieudonné Vital (Haitian,b.1924)

Dieudonné Vital was born on September 28, 1924, in Jacmel, Haiti, and was the brother of renowned painter Pauleus Vital. Before turning to art, Vital served in the Haitian army beginning in 1945. It was his son, painter Maurice Vital, who introduced him to painting, and by 1948, Dieudonné Vital had committed himself to it seriously. His work gained international attention early: by 1973, his paintings had been exhibited in four countries. Vital's paintings belong to the Jacmel school of Haitian naive art, prized for bold color, storytelling, and scenes drawn from everyday Haitian life, fishermen at work, tropical landscapes, and vivid biblical reinterpretations set in his native Jacmel. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he produced many of his best-known works in the 1980s, reflecting the golden era of Haitian folk painting. Source: Franciscus, John Allen.
