Description
Description
In Guacanagaric accueillant les Espagnols après le naufrage de la Santa-Maria, Frantz Zéphirin paints a defining moment of Haitian history. Guacanagaric, the Taíno chief, stands crowned and feathered at the center, flanked by bow-bearing warriors under a crescent moon. Pots of gold and golden necklaces sit at his feet. Below, Spanish sailors wade through the shallows with muskets, a cross, a rolled document, and barrels from the wrecked ship, set against lush green hills and a thatched hut. The title, signature, and date of 20-02-2018 are inscribed on the reverse.
The painting is signed lower right and inscribed TA168001558. Its condition is good, consistent with its age. It comes from a private collection in Maryland and will ship directly to the buyer from there. A certificate of authenticity is included.

About this artist
Frantz Zéphirin (b. 1968, Cap-Haïtien, Haiti) is a Haitian painter known for his vivid, narrative compositions blending history, politics, and Vodou symbolism. He began painting in 1973 under the mentorship of renowned Haitian master Antoine Obin but quickly developed a highly original style distinct from the Cap-Haïtien school. Zéphirin’s work is recognized for intricate detail, intense color, and imaginative imagery, often featuring human figures with animal heads as symbolic commentary on power, society, and human behavior. His paintings draw from biblical themes, historical events, and contemporary life, creating complex visual narratives rich in meaning. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured in major collections and publications, including The New York Times, Le Monde, and The Wall Street Journal. Today, Frantz Zéphirin is regarded as one of the most important contemporary Haitian artists, with works highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
