Description

Night Fishermen by Juan Plutarco Andújar is a masterful oil on canvas panel that highlights the artist's celebrated ability to capture light, atmosphere, and the enduring relationship between Caribbean communities and the sea. Against a vast expanse of deep blue water, two fishermen are illuminated by the glow of an open flame, creating a dramatic interplay of light, reflection, and shadow. Among the Dominican Republic's most renowned painters, Andújar is admired for transforming everyday coastal life into poetic and emotionally resonant imagery. The luminous firelight, reflected across the water's surface, creates a captivating focal point while emphasizing the solitude, resilience, and timeless traditions of maritime life. Rich in mood and technical sophistication, Night Fishermen exemplifies Andújar's distinctive contribution to Caribbean art and offers collectors an exceptional example of his atmospheric seascapes and figurative compositions. Provenance: Private Collection, New York. This artwork is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and will ship from New York.

About this artist

Juan Plutarco Andujar was a renowned modern painter born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, in 1931. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts for four years before moving to Europe and the United States to further his education. After graduating from the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, Spain, he excelled in drawing and watercolor techniques and also explored mural art. Andujar's work was characterized by his use of green, blue-gray, and red tones. He was an exceptional portraitist, but it was his seascapes that earned him international acclaim. He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, with his works held in collections and museums around the world. One notable exhibition was ¡MERENGUE! at El Museo Del Barrio in East Harlem, New York, where his piece “This Skin I'm In” received mention in The New York Times in 2007. Juan Plutarco Andujar is undeniably one of the most celebrated Dominican painters of all time, passing away in 1995. Today, art enthusiasts can acquire items from "Art Café," a collection that includes coffee cups, ashtrays, plates, and decorative round platters. These pieces feature Andujar's art, which is inspired by serene seascapes and the representation of the hardworking Dominican people, showcasing market vendors and fishers.
