Description
This 1960's oil on canvas by Louverture Poisson captures a quiet moment of daily life in rural Haiti. A woman in pink cradles a goat in the foreground while another figure in white stands nearby holding a long pole beneath a tree, and a woman in a red head wrap looks on from the doorway of a thatched-roof home. Poisson's meticulous attention to light and detail, from the dappled shadows on the packed earth to the texture of the surrounding foliage, brings a gentle harmony to the scene, characteristic of the intimate rural compositions for which he is best known. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right, "Poisson, Haiti." Poisson, born in Les Cayes, Haiti, in 1914, moved to Port-au-Prince in 1942 to enlist in the Haitian Air Force and joined the Center d'Art in 1945, going on to hold a one-man exhibition there in 1955. Though he occasionally turned to historical subjects, he became best known for his peaceful rural scenes and carefully composed interiors, developing a lifelong fascination with the effects of light that critic Gerald Alexis described as a long pilgrimage toward perfection in pictures drawn from his environment. This painting comes from a private collection in Illinois. The painting is presented in overall good condition consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity from Myriam Nader Art Gallery is included.

Louverture Poisson was born in Les Cayes, Haiti, in 1914 and died in 1985. He moved to Port-au-Prince in 1942 to enlist in the Haitian Air Force and joined the Centre d’Art in 1948, where he developed into one of Haiti’s most respected painters. Although he occasionally painted historical subjects, Poisson is best known for his intimate interiors, peaceful rural scenes, and meticulously composed paintings. His work is distinguished by a remarkable attention to detail and a lifelong fascination with the effects of light, which became a defining characteristic of his artistic vision.
