Description
Description
This original Haitian oil painting by Louverture Poisson shows a market woman walking toward the viewer along a sunlit country road, a woven basket of fruit balanced on her head. Her ochre dress and red headwrap stand out against the pale, light-washed path, while deep shadows pool beneath the trees and a small rural house on the right. Tall grasses, palms, and a luminous blue sky with soft clouds complete the quiet, atmospheric scene. Painted in 1972, it reflects the everyday rural life that Haitian artists celebrated throughout the 20th century.
The painting comes from a private collection in New Jersey. Its condition is good, consistent with its age, and a certificate of authenticity accompanies the work.
About this artist
About this artist
Louverture Poisson was born in Les Cayes, Haiti, in 1914 and died in 1985. He moved to Port-au-Prince in 1942 to enlist in the Haitian Air Force and joined the Centre d’Art in 1948, where he developed into one of Haiti’s most respected painters. Although he occasionally painted historical subjects, Poisson is best known for his intimate interiors, peaceful rural scenes, and meticulously composed paintings. His work is distinguished by a remarkable attention to detail and a lifelong fascination with the effects of light, which became a defining characteristic of his artistic vision. Whether depicting Haitian countryside life or carefully structured interior scenes, Poisson brought a sense of harmony, atmosphere, and refinement to his compositions. Art critic Gérald Alexis noted that the artist's rigorous formal approach often surpassed the narrative itself, emphasizing the strength of his craftsmanship and visual organization. Today, Louverture Poisson’s paintings are highly sought after by collectors for their masterful treatment of light, elegant compositions, and important contribution to the development of modern Haitian art.
