Description

This visionary composition by Haitian master Préfète Duffaut, titled La Reine Annaila, presents a symbolic and Vodou-inspired cityscape of Jacmel. Painted in 1982, the work reflects Duffaut’s distinctive ability to merge architecture, spirituality, and narrative into a unified composition. At the center, an elevated female figure rises above the landscape, framed by a halo-like arc and holding ritual objects. This commanding presence may evoke Erzulie, the lwa associated with love, beauty, and feminine power. Below, a radiant face appears within a sunburst form, while a bridge filled with figures connects different parts of the city, suggesting passage between worlds. Duffaut structures the composition with rhythmic repetition and clarity, using vibrant colors and simplified architectural forms to create a harmonious yet symbolic environment. The layered city unfolds across water, hills, and architecture, reflecting both real and imagined spaces. Préfète Duffaut was one of Haiti’s most important painters, known for imaginative cityscapes that blend real and visionary environments. His work often incorporates spiritual themes and has been associated with Vodou cosmology, where the visible and invisible realms coexist. This original oil painting is hand-signed and dated 1982 by the artist and titled La Reine Annaila. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.
