About this artist
Rose-Marie Desruisseau was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on August 30, 1953, and died in Montreal, Canada, in 1988. One of Haiti’s most important female painters, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Amerigo Montagutelli and Géo Remponeau and later worked in the studio of Pétion Savain.
A pioneering figure in Haitian art, Desruisseau developed a distinctive style rooted in Haitian history, Vodou symbolism, and national identity. Her powerful use of color and cultural imagery earned her international recognition, with exhibitions in Haiti, Senegal, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Martinique, and the United States. In 1974, she received the Jacques Roumain First Prize for her celebrated painting Délivrance.
