Description
This oil on board by Seymour Bottex portrays a Cap-Haïtien market woman balancing an overflowing basket of tropical fruit, pineapples, bananas, mangoes, and eggplant among them, on her head, with a blue and a pink fish hanging from either side of the basket's rim. Dressed in a red dress with a yellow head wrap and sash, she stands with a woven fruit basket at each hand, her direct gaze anchoring the composition. Bottex's flattened forms and saturated color palette are hallmarks of his market scenes, which document the daily rhythm of vendors carrying goods to sell. Signed "S.E. Bottex, Cap-Haïtien" lower left. The painting comes from a private collection in Washington State, where it will ship from. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity will be issued.

Seymour Etienne Bottex was born on December 25, 1922, in Port-Margot, Haiti, and passed away on May 16, 2016. He began his professional life as a photographer, but in 1955 his older brother, the painter Jean Baptiste Bottex, encouraged him to take up painting—a decision that would lead to an extraordinary artistic career. Bottex later joined the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, where his talent quickly took root.Recognized as one of the finest Haitian Naïve painters, Bottex developed a distinctive style characterized by vivid colors, elongated figures, and a playful yet sophisticated approach to composition. His paintings blend humorous, historical, and biblical themes drawn from Haitian culture, and they have been exhibited internationally and sold through major auction houses, including Sotheby’s in New York. One of Bottex’s most significant contributions to Haitian modern art was his work on the murals of the Episcopal Cathedral of Sainte Trinité in Port-au-Prince—masterpieces tragically lost in the 2010 earthquake. His stylistic originality is noted by art historian Gérald Alexis, who wrote: “Stylisation of forms distinguish Bottex from the École du Nord”(Peintres Haïtiens)
