All About 4 Female Haitian Painters

There is no question that Haitian art is some of the most beautiful in the world. The vibrant colors and unique designs are a testament to the creative spirit of the Haitian people. At Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery in New York, we are dedicated to showcasing the work of Haitian female painters. In this blog post, we want to introduce you to four amazing artists who are making a big impact in the world of Haitian art.

Micheline Dusseck

Born in Haiti, Micheline Dusseck started painting at the impressionable age of 14. At 21, she ended up immigrating to Spain and studied medicine. There, she worked as a biochemistry specialist in Cadiz while still dabbling in her true passion — art. In the past 20 years, Dusseck was able to dedicate her life to her art and has fine-tuned her oil painting style. Over the past two decades, Dusseck's art has been featured in various art exhibitions and is celebrated today.

Sophia Lacroix

At 15 years old, self-taught artist Sophia Lacroix migrated from Haiti to Miami, Florida, where she still currently lives. Due to its large Haitian population and tropical weather, Lacroix has remarked feeling at home in Miami. Lacroix is a master of oil paintings, charcoal drawings, and giclée prints and often features Haitian culture and landscapes in her work.

Mimi Desir

Mimi Desir is a self-taught artist who was born in Bassin Mayan, near Gonaives, Haiti in 1962. Desir developed a passion for art at an early age and studied art classes at George Washington University, Montgomery College, and Maryland University. She paints in both impressionism and realism styles and has exhibited in several art galleries and libraries in the U.S.

Tamara Baussan

In 1909, Tamara Baussan was born in Bakou, Russia, and became a self-taught artist who later moved to Haiti. She is widely considered to be one of the first female painters in Haiti, and her art often captures Haitian landscapes and culture. Her use of vivid colors and unique drawings have made her a well-known figure in the world of Haitian art.
