Haitian Art & The 2010 Earthquake

Artwork is influenced by the cultural identity and experiences of each artist just as much as it is by the artist's vision. In fact, some of the best artwork created in history was created as a result of an event, or a cultural change that made an impact on millions of people. In Haiti, one of the most impactful events in the history of the country occurred in 2010 when an earthquake, measuring a 7.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale, struck.

For the people of Haiti, this was just one more impactful event on their cultural resume, as they had already dealt with slavery, sickness, and economic disparities. That said, the earthquake that struck Haiti did so to its very core — affecting over three million people and leaving over 100,000 people dead.

Not only was the earthquake destructive in nature, but it was also destructive to their community — in turn being destructive to their culture. People were lost, homes were destroyed, and the country’s culture was shaken.

As a Haitian art gallery, it is difficult for us to not think of how much art was lost as well — as galleries proudly displaying the artwork of local heroes collapsed to rubble and historic artworks found hanging in churches and other community centers were lost forever. That said, the people of Haiti are resilient and continue to create artwork centered around joy to this very day.

Haiti And Voodoo Flags

Haitian artwork has always been incredibly culturally-focused. Voodoo flags are an artesian staple influenced by slavery and the molding of religious beliefs, their landscape artwork has always paid homage to their beautiful Caribbean island, and their artwork remains as vibrant and joyous as ever, despite the many challenges that people in Haiti have faced. Whether it be the religious influences, the cultural influences, or the way that Haitians have responded in the face of adversity — it is incredible how they have remained to keep their artwork as spectacular and as joyful as they have.

At Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery, we believe that Haitian artwork should be celebrated — not only for the beauty that it represents, but the people that it represents as well. The soul of Haiti, if you will. In our Haitian art gallery, we are proud to display and sell various works created by some of the most talented artists that can be found on the island.
