Loas
Loas are the ghosts associated with Haiti's Vodou religion. There are numerous Loas, each with their own set of characteristics. Legba is one of the most essential Loas. He is known as the crossroads spirit. Loas have assigned colors, while Legbas have red, orange, and yellow. Erzili Freda, the nature of love, is another significant Loa. Her symbol is a heart, and her favorite color is pink.
There are two Erzilis; the second is Erzili Danto, the motherhood spirit. Her favorite colors are red and blue. Many of the Loas have Catholic equivalents. Erzili Freda represents the Virgin Mary, whereas Erzili Danto represents the Black Madonna.
History of Haiti
The paintings evoke early twentieth-century Haitian art on three themes: the impact of history and memory, the omnipresence of the Loas—the various spirits of the Vodoo religion—in daily life, and the reworking of past art forms.
