Description

This charming original oil on board by Castera Bazile, one of the pioneering figures of the Haitian art movement, captures a tranquil rural scene titled The Cow. Painted circa 1940, the composition depicts a farmer guiding an ox along a winding path surrounded by small thatched cottages, trees, and rolling green hills. Bazile’s distinctive folk style, characterized by simplified forms, rhythmic balance, and a gentle palette, evokes the serenity and harmony of daily Haitian life. Rendered with sincerity and warmth, the work reflects Bazile’s deep connection to the countryside and his contribution to the celebrated Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince. This painting is part of the family collection of Marie and Georges S. Nader and represents an important example of mid-20th-century Haitian art. The artwork is in good condition, unframed, and measures 16.5 x 20 inches. It will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase. Collectors are invited to ask about additional details and provenance documentation. .

About this artist

Castera Bazile started to work at the Centre d'art in 1944, helping Dewitt Peter's students with the necessary elements for still-life subjects. He soon developed an interest in flowers and composition, and one day, he started to paint himself. He painted three murals in the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in 1951. By 1955, he had successfully participated in several exhibits at the Art Center and overseas- the U.S. and Europe. He won the grand prize of the Caribbean International Competition sponsored by Alcoa Corporation and the $1,000 grand prize in a Holiday Magazine contest. His figures are often outlined. In 1966, Bazile died prematurely at the peak of his career.

His art is referred to in all major books on Haitian art and mentioned by many art critics internationally.

" His paintings are instinctive compositions with warm, harmonious hues and the typical sincerity of Haitian folks expression" says Gerald Alexis about Castera's art in his book "Peintres Haitiens". Get the Book Now!
