Collection: Ernst Louizor (Haitian, 1938-2011)
Ernst Louizor was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on October 16, 1938, and died on August 5, 2011. He studied at the École Nationale Smith Duplessis and the Lycée Toussaint Louverture before entering the Academy of Fine Arts, where he trained in drawing, composition, and perspective under Geo Ramponeau. From an early age, Louizor showed a strong instinct for line and form, later developing a highly personal style characterized by memory, observation, and sensitivity to light. He is best known for his impressionistic scenes of marketplaces and seascapes, often blending them into luminous, atmospheric compositions. Art historian Gérald Alexis noted that “thanks to Louizor, Impressionism was reborn in Haiti,” underscoring Louizor’s pivotal role in shaping modern Haitian painting. He also trained several artists, including members of his own family. Louizor exhibited internationally in Haiti, Europe, Japan, and the United States. Today, his work is highly sought after by collectors for its light, movement, and distinctive Impressionist approach within Haitian art. Explore the available works below.
