Description

This vibrant 1980 oil on canvas by Henri-Robert Brésil captures the lush abundance of Haiti’s agricultural landscape in the artist’s distinctive early style. Titled In the Fields, the composition unfolds across layered hills and dense tropical vegetation, where small figures harvest and tend the land beneath fruit-laden trees and rolling mountain forms. An early piece by Brésil, this painting reflects the formative clarity and intricate surface patterning that would later define his mature works. His signature dotting technique and rhythmic botanical detailing create a tapestry-like effect, while a winding blue river guides the eye through the verdant terrain. The elevated perspective reveals successive bands of cultivated land, emphasizing harmony between labor and landscape — a central theme in Haitian rural genre painting. This work measures 36 x 24 inches and is executed in oil on canvas. It is in good condition and is offered unframed. The painting comes from the private collection of Myriam Nader, adding meaningful provenance to an already collectible example of Haitian modern art. A strong early example of Henri-Robert Brésil’s countryside imagery, this painting embodies the richness, vitality, and enduring connection to the land that define his artistic legacy.

About this artist

Henri-Robert Brésil (1952–1999) was a celebrated Haitian painter born in Gonaïves, Haiti, best known for his vibrant countryside landscapes and iconic flamingo scenes. Fascinated by nature from an early age, Brésil developed a distinctive style defined by lush vegetation, layered rural compositions, and masterful green tonalities that give density and atmosphere to his paintings. He began painting professionally in 1973 and was awarded the prestigious Ispan-UNESCO Prize in 1981. His work was exhibited throughout Haiti and internationally in the United States, Puerto Rico, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Japan. Brésil received recognition in major publications including The New York Times and the Miami Herald and is cited in leading books on Haitian art. Art historian Gérald Alexis praised his “sharp use of green hues” in Peintres Haïtiens. Highly collectible and frequently imitated, Henri-Robert Brésil’s paintings remain important examples of modern Haitian art.
