Collection: Othon Obin (Cap-Haitian, b.1920-DCD)
Othon Obin was born in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, on April 2, 1920. He is the son of renowned Haitian painter Sénèque Obin and the nephew of Philomé Obin, founder of the Cap-Haïtien School, placing him in one of Haiti’s most important artistic lineages. He completed his studies at the Frères de l’Instruction Chrétienne and the Lycée National Philippe Guerrier, and worked as a mechanic from 1937 to 1963. He was introduced to painting by artist Rony Léonidas shortly before his father’s death and was encouraged by members of the Obin family, including Seymour Bottex. Othon Obin began painting professionally in the early 1970s. His work follows the Cap-Haïtien tradition, characterized by structured, two-dimensional compositions and a narrative, primitive style rooted in Haitian history and daily life. Today, Othon Obin’s paintings are valued by collectors for their strong connection to the Obin family legacy and their place within the northern Haitian painting tradition.
