Jacques Gabriel, the late Haitian master painter, signed this vintage 16"x 12" painting that depicts a short-haired lady with brown hair and glasses. It is signed in the lower left corner. The overall condition of the artwork is good, except for a small scratch across the signature. It is from the collection of a private collector in Florida, where it will be shipped. Our gallery will provide a Certificate of Authenticity upon purchase.

Jacques Gabriel was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on October 12, 1934, and died in 1988. He first exhibited at the Foyer des Arts Plastiques in 1954, where his work received immediate recognition. Using the proceeds from his early success, he traveled to the United States in 1955 to study painting at the New School for Social Research under Ecuadorian artist Camilo Egas. During this period, he immersed himself in the study of both classical and modern art and met influential cultural figures, including Maya Deren and Selden Rodman.
Returning to Haiti in 1957, Gabriel studied with Roland Dorcély before continuing his artistic journey in the United States and Paris. In France, he embraced Surrealism and exhibited widely, establishing an international reputation.
Gabriel's paintings combine figurative and abstract elements, using expressive faces, masks, geometric forms, and vibrant color to create a distinctive visual language. Seeking to develop a uniquely Haitian iconography, he blended modernist influences with his own cultural identity. Today, Jacques Gabriel is recognized as an important figure in modern Haitian art, and his works are valued for their originality, technical mastery, and international significance.
