Description
Roland B. Etienne captures an intimate moment of daily life in rural Haiti, where a young man and woman share coffee beneath the deep shade of mango trees, thatched roof houses and rolling hills near Cap-Haïtien completing the scene behind them. The work reflects Etienne's attention to the quiet rituals of village life, rendered with a warmth that has become recognizable in his Cap-Haïtien scenes. This piece comes from a private collection in Florida and is in good condition, consistent with its age. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.
About this artist
About this artist
Roland B. Etienne was a 20th-century Haitian painter from Cap-Haitien, working primarily in oil on board and canvas. His paintings depict the rhythms of rural life in northern Haiti: mountain landscapes with modest thatched-roof homes, street musicians, children's games, and everyday scenes of village life. Etienne's compositions are rendered in a folk art idiom typical of the region's self-taught painters, favoring flattened perspective, saturated color, and direct, observational subject matter over academic technique. His signed works, dated from the early 1970s through 1990, appear regularly at auction houses in the United States, and he is documented among the several hundred Haitian painters catalogued in published references on the country's art. Etienne's paintings remain part of the broader record of Haitian folk and naive painting from the mid to late 20th century, valued for their firsthand depiction of everyday life outside the capital.
