Description

This original oil on canvas by Frantz Zéphirin presents a dynamic ceremonial scene at the historic Oloffson Hotel in Port-au-Prince, animated by figures engaged in music, movement, and ritual action. Rich in symbolism, the composition draws on the visual language of Haitian Vodou, with candles, vessels, offerings, and ceremonial gestures suggesting a charged spiritual gathering. A black animal held aloft, a central basin, and the presence of musicians reinforce the ritual atmosphere, while the surrounding participants create a sense of collective energy and invocation.Zéphirin’s signature style is evident in the dense narrative structure, stylized figures, and intricate patterning that fill the pictorial space. The spectral faces that appear in the sky introduce a supernatural dimension, suggesting ancestral presence and the unseen world that often informs Vodou-inspired imagery in Haitian art. The setting of the Oloffson Hotel adds historical and cultural resonance, linking one of Haiti’s best-known landmarks with themes of spirituality, memory, and performance. Executed in 2025, this work reflects Zéphirin’s ongoing exploration of Vodou symbolism, mythology, and Haitian narrative painting. The painting is consistent with the artist’s recognized iconography and contributes to one of the most compelling and collectible currents within contemporary Haitian art. Provenance includes Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery, and a certificate of authenticity will be issued.

About this artist

Frantz Zephirin started painting in 1973 with the Haitian master Antoine OBIN. Very quickly, he broke away from the styled school of Cap Haitian artists and began to work in a highly original style. Starting with themes from the Bible and current events, his paintings soon reflected the delirium of his powerful, devastating imagination. Zephirin frequently uses animals painted in brilliant, sharply contrasting colors to speak out frankly. His highly creative style, which deals with themes of politics, social, and voodoo subjects, soon captured the art world's attention in Haiti, and his career took off very rapidly. Zephirin's work is characterized by intense colors, intricate patterns, and tightly surrounded compositions. He is exceptionally productive, his imagination is compelling, and his social criticism is disturbing. Presently Zepherin's work is recognizable by human figures with animals heads-representing his deep contempt for the commanding body. His art has been featured in art museums and galleries around the world. Since the Haiti earthquake, Zephirin has been featured in stories in the New York Times, Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Times of London, the Guardian, and the BBC. His art has been showcased in the exhibit Haiti Art Naif: Memories of Paradise at the art center Denkmalschmiede Hofgen in Germany.
