Description

This original oil on canvas by Frantz Zéphirin presents a commanding central female figure emerging from water, surrounded by serpentine forms, attendant figures, and dense symbolic elements. The composition draws directly from the visual language of Haitian Vodou, where the presence of the serpent evokes associations with lwa such as Damballah, while the central figure suggests a divine or spiritual feminine presence. Zéphirin’s signature style is fully realized through intricate patterning, saturated harmonies of green and blue, and a highly structured composition that integrates narrative, mythology, and symbolic abstraction. The surrounding figures, celestial motifs, and ritual elements create a layered pictorial field that reflects the interconnected relationship between the visible and invisible realms, a defining characteristic of Vodou-inspired Haitian painting. The work is further distinguished by its encrusted hand-painted frame, which extends the visual language of the composition beyond the canvas and reinforces its icon-like presence. Rather than functioning as a purely decorative border, the frame becomes an integral part of the artwork’s symbolic presentation, enhancing its sculptural impact and collector appeal. This painting is consistent with Zéphirin’s established iconography and contributes to one of the most collected and internationally recognized categories within contemporary Haitian art. Provenance includes Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery, and a certificate of authenticity will be issued.

About this artist

Frantz Zephirin started painting in 1973 with the Haitian master Antoine OBIN. Very quickly, he broke away from the styled school of Cap Haitian artists and began to work in a highly original style. Starting with themes from the Bible and current events, his paintings soon reflected the delirium of his powerful, devastating imagination. Zephirin frequently uses animals painted in brilliant, sharply contrasting colors to speak out frankly. His highly creative style, which deals with themes of politics, social, and voodoo subjects, soon captured the art world's attention in Haiti, and his career took off very rapidly. Zephirin's work is characterized by intense colors, intricate patterns, and tightly surrounded compositions. He is exceptionally productive, his imagination is compelling, and his social criticism is disturbing. Presently Zepherin's work is recognizable by human figures with animals heads-representing his deep contempt for the commanding body. His art has been featured in art museums and galleries around the world. Since the Haiti earthquake, Zephirin has been featured in stories in the New York Times, Le Monde, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Times of London, the Guardian, and the BBC. His art has been showcased in the exhibit Haiti Art Naif: Memories of Paradise at the art center Denkmalschmiede Hofgen in Germany.
