About this artist

Henri-Robert Brésil (1952–1999), born in Gonaïves, Haiti, was a celebrated master of Haitian countryside and flamingo landscapes. Fascinated from an early age by nature and vibrant rural scenery, Brésil developed a distinctive style defined by lush vegetation, layered compositions, and powerful green tonalities. He began painting professionally in 1973 and received the prestigious Ispan-UNESCO Prize in 1981. His work was exhibited in Haiti and internationally in the United States, Puerto Rico, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Japan. Brésil’s paintings were praised in major publications including The New York Times and the Miami Herald, and he is cited in leading books on Haitian art. Gérald Alexis noted that “Brésil's sharp use of green hues gives density to his country scenes.” Highly sought after and widely imitated, Henri-Robert Brésil’s paintings remain important examples of modern Haitian art.
