Description
This powerful painting by renowned Haitian artist and Vodou priest André Pierre depicts Mèt Ogou, the revered Vodou warrior spirit associated with iron, strength, protection, and leadership. Standing firmly within a lush landscape of stylized trees and vegetation, Ogou is portrayed with commanding presence, holding weapons that symbolize his role as guardian and protector. At the figure’s feet appears a ceremonial veve, the sacred ritual symbol used in Vodou ceremonies to invoke the lwa. The warrior’s attire, along with the sword and dagger, reflects Ogou’s connection to military power, courage, and justice. The surrounding vegetation and glowing atmosphere add a mystical quality, reinforcing the spiritual presence of the lwa within the natural world. André Pierre (1914–2005), a leading member of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, was also a practicing Vodou priest (Houngan). His paintings are widely respected for their authentic representation of Vodou spirits and ritual symbolism, making his work particularly sought after by collectors and institutions interested in Haitian spiritual art. A striking example of Pierre’s visionary Vodou imagery and a compelling work by one of Haiti’s most important modern painters. A certificate of authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.
About this artist
About this artist
André Pierre (1914–2005) was a self-taught Haitian master painter born in Port-au-Prince and widely regarded as one of the most important artists of Haitian Vodou art. Often considered the spiritual successor to Hector Hyppolite, Pierre became renowned for his powerful depictions of the lwa (Vodou spirits), placing him at the center of Haiti’s religious and naïve painting traditions. His richly symbolic compositions portray Vodou cosmology with remarkable authenticity and spiritual intensity. André Pierre’s works have been widely reproduced in major books on Haitian art and are held in important collections around the world. Art historian Gérald Alexis noted in Peintres Haïtiens that Pierre “injects rhythms into his works through lines and colors,” conveying the sacred movement and energy of Vodou spirituality.
