Description
Rural Interior Scene by Louverture Poisson offers a charming glimpse into the rhythms of Haitian countryside life. Set within a rustic wooden dwelling, the composition brings together family, animals, and the surrounding landscape in a richly narrative scene that blurs the boundary between interior and exterior space. Through the open doorway, daily life unfolds beneath palm trees and tropical vegetation, while chickens, livestock, and household objects animate the foreground.
A celebrated master of Haitian naïve painting, Poisson is known for transforming ordinary moments into vivid visual stories filled with warmth, observation, and cultural authenticity. His meticulous attention to detail and balanced composition create a sense of intimacy that invites viewers into the world he depicts.
Rich in character and storytelling, Rural Interior Scene exemplifies Poisson's enduring contribution to Haitian art and his ability to capture the beauty, humor, and humanity of everyday rural life.

About this artist
About this artist
Louverture Poisson was born in Les Cayes, Haiti, in 1914 and died in 1985. He moved to Port-au-Prince in 1942 to enlist in the Haitian Air Force and joined the Centre d’Art in 1948, where he developed into one of Haiti’s most respected painters. Although he occasionally painted historical subjects, Poisson is best known for his intimate interiors, peaceful rural scenes, and meticulously composed paintings. His work is distinguished by a remarkable attention to detail and a lifelong fascination with the effects of light, which became a defining characteristic of his artistic vision. Whether depicting Haitian countryside life or carefully structured interior scenes, Poisson brought a sense of harmony, atmosphere, and refinement to his compositions. Art critic Gérald Alexis noted that the artist's rigorous formal approach often surpassed the narrative itself, emphasizing the strength of his craftsmanship and visual organization. Today, Louverture Poisson’s paintings are highly sought after by collectors for their masterful treatment of light, elegant compositions, and important contribution to the development of modern Haitian art.
