Description
Description
Maxan Jean Louis, a self-taught Haitian naïve Vodou painter, presents this original acrylic on canvas measuring 20 x 24 inches, a powerful work that confronts a massacre scene with vivid color and urgent narrative force. Using his signature flattened silhouettes, rhythmic repetition, and bold decorative patterning, the artist transforms collective trauma into a visually commanding tableau that demands attention while preserving a distinctly Haitian pictorial language. The densely populated composition and high-contrast palette heighten the emotional intensity, making the painting both a striking statement piece and a significant example of contemporary Haitian art shaped by Vodou culture and political history. The artwork is in excellent condition, signed and dated in the lower left, and is sold unframed. It comes from a private collection in Virginia and will be shipped directly from that collection. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.
About this artist
About this artist
Born in Jérémie, Haiti, on March 17, 1966, Maxan Jean Louis began painting in 1992 after encouragement from his cousins, acclaimed artists Henri and Eric Jean-Louis. He quickly developed a naïve style inspired by Vodou traditions and Haiti’s socio-political reality, sometimes shifting between motif-driven compositions and a childlike surrealist approach used to address social events. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Charlotte Zander Museum in Bönnigheim, Germany, and he has participated in international exhibitions including the Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, the Haiti Art Expo during Art Basel Miami Beach 2010, and presentations connected to Patricia Goodrich’s 2014 multimedia installation Voices & Visions: Artists of Haiti at the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University in Miami.
