Description

This striking oil painting by Haitian master Préféte Duffaut depicts a Haitian Vodou ceremony centered around a sacred fire surrounded by ritual veve symbols. A towering symbolic figure rises above the flames while ceremonial objects, bottles, drums, and offerings are arranged within the ritual space. Groups of figures gathered along surrounding terraces appear to witness the ceremony, creating a layered and dramatic narrative that reflects the spiritual atmosphere of Haitian Vodou traditions. Duffaut, a leading artist associated with the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, is internationally recognized for his visionary imagination and complex compositions. While widely celebrated for his famous “villes imaginaires,” he also explored powerful spiritual themes rooted in Haitian culture. This painting demonstrates his distinctive approach, combining bold architectural forms, symbolic imagery, and vibrant color. The work comes from a private collector in California, from where it will be shipped. A certificate of authenticity will be provided. A visually compelling and culturally rich painting by one of Haiti’s most important modern artists, offering collectors a distinctive example of Duffaut’s imaginative and spiritual work.
