Description
This vibrant oil painting by Haitian master Préféte Duffaut depicts a ceremonial Vodou landscape animated with symbolic imagery and ritual energy. Three monumental horned forms rise above the composition, decorated with veve symbols and connected by serpentine elements that wind through the scene. Crowds gather along elevated bridges and terraces beneath a radiant rainbow, suggesting a communal spiritual celebration. The composition incorporates important Vodou iconography, including ritual symbols, serpents, ceremonial objects, and sacred markings surrounding a central fire. These elements evoke themes of spiritual transformation, protection, and collective ritual within Haitian Vodou tradition. Duffaut, a major figure associated with the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, is internationally recognized for his visionary imagination and narrative compositions. While widely celebrated for his famous villes imaginaires, the artist also explored spiritual themes deeply rooted in Haitian culture. A striking late work by the artist and a compelling example of Duffaut’s imaginative interpretation of Haitian Vodou symbolism.
