This vibrant oil painting by Haitian master Préféte Duffaut depicts a ceremonial Vodou landscape animated with symbolic imagery and ritual energy. Three monumental horned forms rise above the composition, decorated with veve symbols and connected by serpentine elements that wind through the scene. Crowds gather along elevated bridges and terraces beneath a radiant rainbow, suggesting a communal spiritual celebration. The composition incorporates important Vodou iconography, including ritual symbols, serpents, ceremonial objects, and sacred markings surrounding a central fire. These elements evoke themes of spiritual transformation, protection, and collective ritual within Haitian Vodou tradition. Celebrated as “a master of popular painting in the 1940s,” Duffaut is renowned for his fantastical, explicitly urban compositions.
